As many of you know, my nutritional therapy practice is under a year old. I’m constantly research, learning, and trialing new healing modalities to add to my ‘toolbox’.
Flower essences and therapeutic use of essential oils are a couple of additions I’ve made over the last few months, and I just received my first clinical text on homeopathy.
Right now, I’m working on using diet and nutrients to affect mitochondrial function and gene expression. Research is the main reason that you haven’t seen too many new blog posts come down the pipeline.
I’m wallowing in nutrition nerdiness.
As I find things that work well with me and my family, they move into my practice, and then ultimately here to help you.
The Paleo Approach is the first product that I am recommending for your toolbox.

The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body
Recently, I received a review copy of a brand new book by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, scientist, super nutrition nerd, and blogger at The Paleo Mom.
It’s designed as a comprehensive guide to reversing autoimmune disease, but it also works to correct so many other conditions.
It’s almost ridiculous how good it is. Sarah packed so much information into the book that she had to split it into two books – what many of us are calling a ‘textbook’ and then a 150 recipe cookbook – just to get it published.
I’m now using The Paleo Approach as a research text in my practice and will be giving a copy to each and every client for their reference library.
It is my #1 go-to book for a broad yet in-depth overview to autoimmunity and healing dysfunction at the cellular level.
Best thing about the book is that you don’t have to be a practitioner to understand it. A vast understatement, Sarah is an accomplished writer. It’s very hard to step out of your head and make a complicated subject easy to understand. She’s a master at it.
On histamine intolerance —
Furthermore, histamine production may be substantially higher in those with gut dysbiosis, especially SIBO. Histamine production in food is generally the result of food handling, processing or fermentation.
Certain foods are particularly susceptible to developing significant amounts of histamine through processing/packaging, including: fish, processed and fermented meats, cheeses, fermented vegetables and soy products, and alcoholic beverages.
A wide variety of bacteria are capable of metabolizing histidine into histamine. These are called decarboxylasepositive microorganisms and they can typically produce other biogenic amines in addition to histamine.
As a general rule, these bacteria are associated with food spoiling, although their activity can generate problematic amounts of histamine long before a food is considered rotten. […]
You may recognize many of these as normal residents of the gut (likely why we need a DAO barrier in the first place) and even more importantly, several of these are likely to be present in excessive numbers during SIBO (see page ##).
This means that not only can these types of bacteria cause increased levels of histamine in your food before you eat it, but they may also be creating large amounts of histamine in your gut.
Is This Book Right for You?
If you have a chronic illness, chances are – a good chance – that you also have issues with your mitochondria. The Paleo Approach helps to reset those mitochondria without needing an advanced medical degree to do it. Without even thinking of it really.
The Paleo Approach gives you the why, but, most importantly, it gives you the HOW. It contains a full protocol that includes troubleshooting, and then tells you how to reintroduce foods.
I’m smitten.
Those of you who have chronic allergies, joint pain, fatigue, inflammation, digestive dysfunction, and/or suffer from any other chronic disorder or disease will benefit from this approach to healing.
It’s not a fad diet, it’s not a new drug, it’s a total approach to healing your genes, your cells, and reversing symptoms you never thought possible.
While there’s a lot of information in The Paleo Approach , it’s broken up into an easy to follow guide.

Sarah will give you a video overview of the book —
