  1. According to Mary Enig in "Eat Fat, Lose Fat", coconut oil won't leave stains. I've used it without the baking soda and never had a problem. I am interested in knowing the benefit of the added baking soda? Dryer, I'm guessing? I love all the options you added…Looking forward to trying a little scent!

  2. Clee, based on what I know of baking soda's properties, it helps with neutralizing odors and absorbs a bit of excess moisture. I am having problems with irritation now that the weather is so warm, so I'll be modifying my post to note that. Thanks for mentioning that you use straight coconut oil! I've shared it with others and plan to start it myself tomorrow.

    1. ive used just coconut oil before and it does seem to work. – ps i also smell of beef stew and onions when i get too ripe lol – my husband will kindly tell me (as if i dont notice myself) thanks for sharing here!!! i have shared your page on my personal fb page and also the page i do for my blog (but im not exactly blogging much)

      1. Okay, now I’m glad I posted that so I know that I’m not alone! Thanks very much for spreading the word about nutritional therapy. I appreciate every extra ear or set of eyeballs that it reaches. <3

  3. Love this! Can you please post a picture so I can add it to my board on Pinterest? Thanks!

  4. I’m so glad you shared this! About a year ago we began cutting out processed foods. Then last fall I started making my own deoderarnt. I still find that I stink by the end of the day though….. It is really frustrating to me. Now I wonder if I should work on cutting out that sugar? My armpits smell just as you described yours. ugh…….

  5. I made some home made deodorant recently using store bought baking soda, coconut oil, shea butter and arrowroot powder but it seems to be irritating me. I tried leaving the baking soda out but that was a big smelly mistake. I notice your recipe calls for “aluminum free baking soda” . Where can I find this and might it help with the irritation?
Thanks so much for your help.

    1. I forgot I wrote it with aluminum-free baking soda. Actually, all baking soda is aluminum-free. 🙂 You can try using 3/4 arrowroot and 1/4 baking soda, add a powdered probiotic to just arrowroot, or even replace with magnesium oil to see if that works. Body odor is generally caused by a magnesium deficiency and/or liver toxicity.

Any time I notice body odor, I hop into a detox bath to restore my magnesium levels.

  6. Hi Jennifer, I recently started making my own deodorant with coconut oil and it works so great! I found your post on VGN and will have to share it on my Facebook page tomorrow. Thanks for the recipe!

  7. Thought I’d share what I’ve been using for my serious body odor that has worked from day one: Milk of Magnesia. I use the cotton squares and apply this to the entire underarm area and it works thank God! It could be that it works because I have a magnesium deficiency…not sure. ***I’ll try your recipe too.

      1. The 2 most common causes of body odor are magnesium deficiency and liver toxicity, so you have hit on a great natural remedy to body odor for many people! Epsom salt/magnesium chloride baths and magnesium oil are also helpful for combating body odor for people who are magnesium deficient!

  8. My husband and I both use a solid crystal stone and there is never any odor. It’s just mineral salts. If I don’t use it, I can definitely tell the difference. I realize it’s not homemade, but it is natural. And one stone lasts forever (or at least a couple years). Purchase at a health food store.

    1. I have never been able to find out what the actual ingredient list is and it’s manufactured in factories, so I’m a little hesitant to use or recommend them. Thank you for sharing though!

  9. Got a quick question… I’m looking for a natural deodorant without coconut due to allergies… Any suggestions for substitutes??
