  1. Thanks for this! I have a little niece with a severe peanut allergy and had no idea. Just sent this article to my sister right away. I can’t believe this is the first I’ve heard of this. Thanks again!

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this. My sister is violently allergic to peanuts and I am so grateful to have this information!

  3. Thank you for sharing! – is there a way to test for cross-reactivity? My son is already so allergic to everything. We feed him non-GMO soy yogurt since he won’t take anything else – I wonder if that is ok. Can you send a link to the study?

    1. I’m sure there are probably blood tests to check but I’m not aware of them. I’m sorry but you’ll have to contact Dr. Kaayla directly for links to any studies. Since this was a guest post, I don’t have her resources.

I wouldn’t consume of feed my family any soy product that wasn’t non-GMO and properly fermented. Dr. Kaayla (who wrote this article) has a wonderful book called the Whole Soy Story that explains further: http://amzn.to/ZMBNuo or you can also consult the almighty Google for more information.

  4. 10 years ago when my daughter was first diagnosed our very conventional, but up to date, allergist warned us to be “cautious” with soy due to its cross reactivity. We only use soy sauce, but maybe we should reconsider that as well! Thanks for covering this.

  5. Thanks for sharing. Had no idea that those with peanut allergies could very well have soy allergies too. I have soy allergies but not peanut allergies…The biggest issue for me about the soy controversy is the fact that most of it is GMO. So whether one is allergic or not, just because it is GMO, it should be avoided…

  6. This exact thing happened to our peanut allergic son when he was about six. We had no idea that he was allergic to soy, he took a few drinks of chocolate soy milk, immediately started having chest pain and trouble breathing. This was the only time that he threw up during a reaction and I believe it saved his life. I actually believe God saved his life, but used throwing up to do it. After he threw up, his symptoms settled do. The suddeness and severity of his reaction combined with the fact that my thirteen year old twins were watching him while I ran to the store are why I consider this the worst reaction and the closest to death he has come so far.

    1. I am so glad that everything turned out okay! That has to be the scariest feeling as a parent. We are very lucky to not deal with anaphylactic reactions with my daughter, and I can’t even imagine how that would feel. Hugs to you mama.

  7. I have been severely allergic to peanuts since before it was “cool” to be allergic to everything and I’m 32. My whole life. It’s just crazy to me that this soy-peanut connection is just being figured out. I’ve never been about to handle soy and it’s only getting worse!!! My best advice to anyone dealing with a peanut allergy is to cut it out as completely as you can and when asked say you are allergic to both peanuts and soy!! My heart goes out to all you mommas dealing with young kids but as long as you stay proactive and you teach your kids to be proactive about it, it is a very manageable thing!!!

  8. I’ve had soy and peanut allergies all my life, one of my most severe allergens. I have almost died from anaphylaxis several times. The link between them has been known for a long time. however , my opinion, is that soy is used for an extender and cheap filler in processed food for the food companies to make more money, if they had to use real ingredients, meat etc. their profits would go down. This is why I feel soy is downplayed. The hidden names, textured vegetable protein, hydrolized vegetable protein, autolized protein, are their ways of hiding it. I wish they would realize that people can die from this and be honest about their products.
