Last night, I managed to accomplish almost five hours of very broken sleep thanks to little miss Katie (3.5 years old). She fell asleep just after six o’clock on the way home from a birthday party. I mentioned in yesterday’s post how tired she has been lately. She slept restlessly and woke up often, whining and finally crying. I gave her Colic Calm (baby version of activated charcoal) for her upset tummy at eight o’clock and rubbed her torso front and back to relieve some of the discomfort. She slept marginally better until 2:45 when she woke up hungry and thirsty. It took an hour to get her back to sleep after a bathroom break, drink of water, and a couple bites of rice. It took me even longer, but we slept well until seven…though I could have happily continued snoozing away. Thankfully, I am surprisingly chipper for such a rough night.
I was not prepared to begin GAPS intro today, and we have some non-intro food to finish up before hitting it hardcore. That means our meals will look more like intro as the day goes on. I still need to boil a chicken for meat and broth and whip up a couple of soups. I have some broth in the fridge, but it’s not a hard gel and is getting old. I’m just going to toss it and make a new batch. Katie is not one for repeating the same meal too often, so I don’t have the luxury of making one big pot of soup and heating that up for a couple of days.
2 pm update: Katie hasn’t been well today. Red-rimmed eyes that occasionally water, runny nose, and some lethargy. She is still my loving, happy girl though. 🙂 I think she picked up a virus from the birthday party, so I’m glad I kept her home from school. What a perfect day for intro! Rainy, dreary, cold, and virus-laden. Ick.
4:30 pm: Katie is dehydrated. She’s been drinking but must have been dehydrated from yesterday. I’m going to rely on ice, since she’s been asking for something cold and crunchy most of the day and is enjoying it. It’s ice from the automatic ice machine in my freezer, so I’m going to make some with our reverse osmosis water tonight. I’m feeling fine but could really use some cookies. 🙂
Evening wrap up: My little munchkin was really sick all day with a slight fever and got progressively worse until about 5:30 when she perked up a little and played for a bit. She’s previously been on the sofa all day watching TV, almost threw up once and wouldn’t let me get up to do anything (my poor kitchen!). Her hunger returned by dinner and she was very receptive to the rice congee I made, but I have to admit that it was pretty delicious. Sometimes sick food really hits the spot. I’m going to try for two soups tomorrow. I’m hoping it’s the last day of rice for Katie. I’m going to try to stay away from it. Cookie cravings started in late afternoon for me but weren’t too bad. My energy was going downhill at that point though, so much so that I almost napped at six o’clock. Here’s hoping that tomorrow is better!
Beginning of day: Custom Probiotic 11-strain
Breakfast: smashed organic avocado with Celtic sea salt, mashed organic potatoes (boiled in filtered water) with Celtic sea salt and duck fat; additional grapefruit for me, segments cut out to avoid much of the fiber; Adrenal Complex (me)
Snack: grilled leftover grass-fed, grain-finished organic hamburger (Katie); S.O.L.E. [Sustainable Organic Local Ethical] applesauce -apples and filtered water – then some boiled organic, somewhat local chicken with Celtic sea salt (me) A bit of tummy upset after the meat for both of us.
white tea, elderberry syrup; Adrenal Complex (me) Katie needed Colic Calm not too long after the elderberry syrup; not sure if it’s a coincidence
Snack: mashed potatoes, boiled chicken in broth (Katie) Katie almost threw up after this but I think it’s more the virus than the food or a low blood sugar issue
Mid/late afternoon meal: boiled chicken with guacamole [organic avocado, organic lemon juice, Celtic sea salt] (me); ice (Katie) Katie had been craving something cold and crunchy all day; she was very happy with the ice and it helped get more fluids into her
Munchie: organic date (Katie) No mention of a bellyache but she doesn’t always like to tell me if it’s not a bad one
Dinner: white rice congee [white rice, chicken broth, filtered water, Celtic sea salt] Katie required time for her belly to settle once during eating but wolfed down this meal; first sign of real hunger today
Late night munchies (me): clementine, 3 olives, mashed potatoes with duck fat and Celtic sea salt

I've been contemplating going through the GAPS intro again myself! I have had a real hard time lately staying away from the sugar and (of course) notice I feel so great eating broth based soups (which I do everyday for lunch). I do feel fine eating some beans (not too many) and rice congee as long as I have meat, broth or eggs with it. Unfortunately I still have a really rough time with raw vegetables (although fresh vegetable juices are fine again!). My thought is that maybe if I go through the GAPS intro again, I might be able to advance my healing to be able to handle some of these again? Good luck with your re-intro, I'll be sending to and Katie support from the other side of the nation!
Rufus, it seems many of us who started intro together in April could use a reset. i think we would definitely see a decrease in symptoms and jump start some new healing, since our bodies have had time to heal and are so much cleaner. Now I know why Baden has done a few rounds of intro! You should jump right in with us (we'll get there soon) and pick up the old 'Sugar Is Poison' mantra. A very generous reader shared this link with me on what nutrients you are deficient in based on your cravings http://www.naturopathyworks.com/pages/cravings.php. I'm going to test it out, and then share it on the blog if it works for me.
