GAPS, day 4
Sorry for another word jumble. Once I start feeling really well again, I’ll probably organize my thoughts better. Probably.
Yay! Oil pulled today. Either Katie or I weren’t feeling well or needed to eat right away for me to do it earlier in the week. It’s a method of detoxing that I’ve been doing for about a month with really impressive results. Okay, I remembered that Katie had a Trader Joe’s squeezable applesauce around lunchtime. We had to pick up our first raw milk and grass-fed meat order and she dropped her chicken on the floor of the truck on the way there. Utter meltdown 15 minutes later when we got there and she wouldn’t let up or get in her seat until I found her something to eat. Luckily, found the applesauce packet lurking in her bag. That was a big dose of guilt for going off the diet and a sigh of relief at the same time. I also added a raw garlic clove to my chicken soup on day 2. That had to be my die off reaction on day 3. WOW. It was a teeny tiny one, about 1/3 the size of an average clove. It’s a good thing I didn’t test Katie’s sensitivity and start adding garlic from the beginning. I think I’ll try it as the next food after eggs.
So, I moved slightly into stage 2 on Wednesday by adding 1/4 of a teaspoon of raw egg yolk into Katie’s soup and dropping the rest into mine. She has always been intolerant/allergic to eggs, even if I only cooked the yolk. My procedure to get pure yolk? I thought you’d never ask. 😉 I rinse the yolk under a light stream of water and lightly rub it with my fingers until it’s no longer slimy while pinching off as much of the thick white membrane stringy things as I can. I then hold the yolk over a bowl and break the membrane. I hold the membrane until most of the yolk is out, squeezing it slightly and then throw it out. Voila! She only had a bit of her soup, so I didn’t count that as much of a trial. I weakened and did 1/4 t again today in more soup. So far so good, but it normally takes 2-3 days before she gets really whiny and breaks out in an eczema rash on her belly, legs, and girly parts and gets scaly skin on her shins and cheeks. Those are extra shea butter days. We use pure raw shea butter.
Energy has been pretty good for both of us. Katie even happily played by herself for quite awhile with no tv, and that has been pretty much non-existent for the last few days. I noticed that she’s a bit more articulate in her pronunciation of words and has increased her spoken vocab, like using the word frightened instead of scared. Both hubby and I talk a lot, and Katie has definitely followed in our footsteps. I didn’t expect any changes at all in this area! I feel a bit weak and winded at times and am still taking it pretty easy but did dishes today instead of needing hubby to do it. That was a big accomplishment this week! Side note: DO NOT expect your kitchen to stay clean every day unless there is a non-GAPS intro person at home with you all day. It’s killing me, but I can tough it out for a bit. No epsom or sea salt bath for either of us tonight.
Today’s food (may be missing some; variety is key for Katie to eat, so I’m cooking a lot more than planned):
1. braeburn apple and bag of frozen cubed butternut squash boiled in chicken broth and pureed the night before. Katie ate it like applesauce cold out of the fridge for breakfast. I was worried about low blood sugar, and she has so wanted applesauce lately. Probably the bad yeasties talking and the applesauce yesterday didn’t help. I took a couple of bites after I warmed it but was completely turned off by the sweetness. Huh? With a sugar addiction? Weird.
2. a ton of roast for Katie – like a pound around 10 am or so then more later – , sometimes with broth & sometimes just soaked in it. She was starving all day and ate like a linebacker. Let the healing begin! 🙂
3. broccoli soup – broccoli boiled til it was dead in chicken broth and pureed
4. pea soup – peas properly killed in lamb broth and pureed (I miss fresh food)
4. maybe some leftover soups from previous day, drawing a blank here
