10:53 am We’d be officially on day 2 of intro if I were strictly following the protocol. The idea teased around in my head all yesterday to keep going, but I just can’t do it. As of right now, we can’t knock out all raw foods. I feel, well, gross by the evening of day one when we do. Katie seems to feel the same.
As soon as I have something fresh, I almost immediately start to feel better. Foods that still contain their enzymes do such a great job in helping to digest food and clean up the body (detox), that I really feel it when I don’t have any. I understand how the program works, but my body doesn’t seem ready to follow intro to the letter.
We’ll try modified intro (lots of soups, some well-cooked and some steamed veggies, fresh pressed juices, fruit, and occasional raw veggies) and see how that goes for us for now. I’ll adjust based on how we’re doing with each food. It feels like the right path for us for now.
Katie had trouble sleeping all night, was up from 2-4 so ate an apple and watched tv with daddy, and woke up with her nonna’s cold. Pbhpbhpbhpbh – that’s Jen language for a raspberry-. We took Katie’s probiotic (I thought I’d start light and use hers today instead of mine), dosed with elderberry syrup (we use it whenever we need an immunity boost), ate, and are now enjoying a tv day with a mountain of tissue until we have to pick up our raw milk and sundry animal parts order from Hicks Dairy Farm.
I had a handful of nuts just after midnight, since I was starving and couldn’t stomach any more meat or broth. NO NUTS on intro for me. Yikes! I got very irritable, then my joints started burning, concentrated in my hands and knees. Then came flushed skin, elevated heart rate, slight feeling of anxiety, breathlessness, and slight nausea.
With Katie up and feeling so miserable, I curled up in bed at 2 and read a trashy romance novel (a weakness of mine). I ate an apple about 4 and I felt much better then finally fell asleep just after 4:30 am. Surprisingly, I don’t feel extremely awful and didn’t want any caffeine after four hours of sleep.
9:46 pm We survived today pretty well. It was rainy, cold and gloomy so perfect for a down day. Katie’s mucous stayed clear. She wasn’t happy about her nose dripping like a faucet but it almost cleared up a couple of times, amazingly I think it was after she had some raw apple. I’ll have to keep an eye on that.
No other symptoms but tired. That could have been from an awful night sleep and no nap, so I’ll reevaluate tomorrow. Some ginger tea and a teeny bit of my probiotic on her tongue to see if it would help eradicate those bad bugs and clean house and she was off to sleep by 8…up every 1/2 hour since, but hubby just took her pee so hopefully she’ll settle down. It sounds like she’s breathing better. Fingers crossed!
This is her third cold ever, and I get a dose of anxiety when she’s congested and can’t sleep. Sleep is too important to miss especially when your body needs to heal. Oh and the nuts I ate! If I have them with a glass of raw milk, I apparently don’t notice the problems that kept me up last night. The powers of raw food!
I just had a couple more without the milk and I already feel my knuckles hurting. Time for some milk and then the kitchen is closed for the night.
First meal (1st breakfast): 1/2 pear for Katie; avocado with lemon juice for me
Second meal (2nd breakfast – yes, we are hobbits): meatball soup (mini meatballs in chicken broth) for Katie; I’m not ready to eat yet so maybe just a cup of chicken broth in a bit
Third meal (late lunch): finally having my broth with some boiled chicken (went a little too long without food); Katie had an avocado with boiled chicken meat
Forth meal (snack): apple for Katie; mixed nuts and glass of raw milk for me (too tired to look inside for strength right now to avoid them)…snuck two pieces of apple and went back for a second glass of milk to accompany a ten minute unavoidable nap at 6 pm
Fifth meal (dinner): ground beef simmered in chicken broth with frozen peas for Katie; I can’t eat boiled ground beef, especially when it’s tough pastured meat so hubby and I whipped up a Mexican inspired dish (shredded boiled chicken, sour cream I just picked up from the farm, Cholula hot sauce, and butter lettuce to wrap it in)

I’m really enjoying reading your entries. I’m waiting for the book to fly in and we’ll start in a week and a half. My 27 month old has many anaphylactic and non anaphylactic allergies and many other sensitivities and eczema. I just found your blog today. I’m a little scared as I read how you’re reacting to the intro. I didn’t think some broth and meat and veggies could do that. I’m more worried about my son’s reactions. hmmm, will keep reading, this is very interesting to me. Thank you for taking time to share your journey.
You’re welcome! After our experiences, I do not recommend intro for most people and especially young children when starting the diet. We are actually having much better luck with the Autoimmune Paleo protocol foods list coupled with the GAPS ideals.
